北京时间9月3日，据著名NBA记者沃神报道，丹尼斯-史密斯已经与开拓者签下了一份训练营合同。
今年夏天，丹尼斯-史密斯的新秀合同到期，活塞没有为他提供资质报价，他成为了一名完全自由球员。但在随后的自由市场上无人问津，只得以一份训练营合同加盟开拓者，保留留在NBA的希望。
2020-21赛季，史密斯先后效力于尼克斯和活塞，场均得到6.7分2.4篮板3.3助攻。
