由于2016年欧洲杯和2018年世界杯没有出线，这也是2014年世界杯以来荷兰队大赛首胜。
荷兰还终结了欧洲杯4连败，13年来欧洲杯首次获胜。2012年欧洲杯小组赛，荷兰队3战皆负出局；2008年1/4决赛加时1比3被俄罗斯淘汰，上次取胜是2008年小组赛2比0胜罗马尼亚。
