马拉多纳曾于本月初进行脑部手术，当时医院诊断他的脑部出现了硬膜下血肿，并及时对他进行了手术。据阿根廷媒体报道，手术成功完成，但最近马拉多纳的身体状态并不是很好。
阿根廷当地时间12月25日中午12点50分，马拉多纳在家中心脏骤停失去意识，附近的医生第一时间前来进行抢救，最终也没能挽救他的生命。13点02分，马拉多纳抢救无效离开了人世。
